What a Transparent Car Buying Experience Looks Like in Ontario

Buying a vehicle is a major financial decision. A transparent dealership should make it easy to understand the purchase price, trade-in value, all-in pricing, and the complete loan terms—so you can decide with confidence.

Looking for a simple checklist? Scroll to the “Ask For This” table and bring it with you.

Why transparency matters

Comfortable. Clear. No “too good to be true” surprises.

Some dealerships focus on pressure and confusion—quoting a payment without clearly showing what it adds up to, rolling in products you didn’t ask for, or using unclear trade numbers that make the deal look better than it is. We believe your vehicle purchase should feel simple, fair, and fully explained.

Bourgeois approach

Transparent pricing + straightforward terms

We focus on the full picture: the purchase price, all-in pricing, your trade value, and the complete finance breakdown. You’ll never be asked to “just trust the payment.”

Local roots matter: with over 80 years of community presence, we take pride in doing things the right way—because it’s the right thing to do.
Common “confusion tactics”

Watch for payments without the math

A monthly payment can be made to look “better” by extending term length, changing the rate assumptions, or embedding fees/products. If you don’t see the full breakdown, you can’t compare offers fairly.

Tip: Always ask for the selling price, rate, term, cost of borrowing, and total contract obligation.
1) Know the purchase price

Don’t shop “payment only” — shop the real vehicle price and total cost.

The most transparent deals start with a clear, itemized purchase price. If a dealership only talks about “what payment works for you,” you may not be seeing the true math.

Red flag

“Desking with leg” (inflated payment)

In dealership slang, “leg” can mean quoting a payment that’s intentionally higher than the real payment would be. That creates room to later add products/fees while staying under the payment you already accepted.

Why this is bad for customers: it can hide the true selling price, make comparisons impossible, encourage undisclosed add-ons, and increase the total you pay without you realizing where the extra cost came from.
What to ask for

Bring the deal into the light

Ask for the selling price and a written breakdown of: fees, taxes, rate, term, cost of borrowing, and total contract obligation.

Simple test: “If I took the payment x number of payments, what’s the total—and what portion is interest?”

Payment can change for legitimate reasons

Not every payment change is deceptive—rate tiers, approvals, down payment, lien payouts, term length, and optional protections can all affect payment. Transparency means those changes are explained and documented.

2) Understand your trade

Trade value vs. trade value “including tax savings” (Ontario HST)

In Ontario, trading in a vehicle can reduce the HST you pay because tax is generally applied to the price difference (purchase price minus trade value). That’s a real benefit—but it should be explained clearly.

How the HST savings works (plain language)

If the vehicle you’re buying is $25,000 and your trade value is $10,000, you typically pay HST on $15,000, not $25,000. That can save you a meaningful amount in tax.

Good question to ask: “Is this trade figure the actual trade value, or does it include the tax savings?”

Why this matters in negotiations

Some dealerships present a bigger trade number by blending in the tax savings to make the offer look higher. Transparency means showing the actual trade value and then showing the separate tax savings so you can compare offers apples-to-apples.

Pro tip: Ask for a breakdown that shows: trade value, tax savings, lien payoff (if any), and net trade.

Knowing a realistic range for your trade helps you spot inflated or unclear numbers. Use our trade tool, then let us review condition, history, and market demand to confirm the value.

3) Watch for unadvertised add-ons

Optional protections should be your choice — not quietly built into your quote.

Products like wheel & tire, key fob, appearance protection, rust modules, or extended warranties can be valuable—when they’re clearly disclosed and you choose them.

What to look for

“That’s just the payment”

If a payment quote includes products you didn’t ask for—and you aren’t told what they are—your ability to compare dealerships disappears. You should be able to see each product, its price, and whether it’s optional.

Remember: You are only obligated to pay the advertised price plus HST and licensing. Optional items should be clearly presented and selectable.
The transparent way

Itemized and opt-in

We separate the vehicle price from optional protections and show how each choice changes the payment and total cost— so you can decide what’s worth it for your driving habits and budget.

Ask this: “Please show me the quote with no add-ons, then itemize any optional protections separately.”
4) Understand all-in pricing

In Ontario, the advertised price should already include mandatory fees.

Ontario requires all-in price advertising: the price you see should include the vehicle price and any mandatory fees a dealer intends to charge (e.g., administration/documentation fees, freight/PDI where applicable). The usual exceptions are HST and licensing.

What “all-in” protects you from

Surprise “mandatory” charges added at the last minute. If a fee is required, it should not be hidden or introduced late.

Tip: Ask for a copy of the quote or bill of sale breakdown before you leave the dealership.

Online payment calculators should match reality

If there’s a required fee to finance, it should be reflected in the pricing/payment examples you’re shown. Transparent buying means the numbers online and in-store line up.

Ask this: “Is this payment based on the all-in price, and does it include any mandatory fees already?”

5) Demand clear loan terms

A transparent finance quote includes the rate, term, cost of borrowing, and total obligation.

You are fully within your rights to request a complete breakdown of the loan terms before committing. If you don’t know the interest rate, term length, and total contract obligation, you can’t make a confident decision.

Interest rate (APR)

Ask for the exact rate used to calculate the payment—not a range, not “around X%.”

Term & frequency

Monthly vs. bi-weekly matters. Longer terms can lower payments but raise total interest.

Cost of borrowing

Request the full interest cost over the contract and your total obligation (payments + down + fees, if applicable).

A simple phrase that works

“Before I decide, please provide the selling price, all-in fees, interest rate, term, cost of borrowing, and total contract obligation in writing.”

The Transparent Deal Checklist

Use this table as your “ask for this” guide when shopping, comparing quotes, and negotiating. A transparent dealership should be able to provide each item clearly and comfortably.

What to ask for Why it matters What a transparent dealer will do
Selling price (not just payment) Lets you compare offers and understand what you’re actually paying for the vehicle. Shows the price upfront and ties the payment directly to that price.
All-in price breakdown Prevents surprise “mandatory” fees at signing. Itemizes mandatory fees and confirms only HST & licensing are extra.
Trade value vs. tax savings Avoids inflated trade numbers that look better than reality. Shows actual trade value and explains the separate Ontario HST savings.
Rate (APR) & term Small changes can significantly change payment and total interest. Discloses exact rate and term used to calculate your payment.
Cost of borrowing Shows what the loan costs in interest over time. Provides a clear cost-of-borrowing number, not vague explanations.
Total contract obligation Confirms the total you will pay over the contract. Provides total payments and overall obligation in writing.
Optional products itemized Stops undisclosed protections from being rolled into the payment. Shows “base deal” first, then optional add-ons as opt-in choices.
Copy of the quote / BOS draft Protects you from “numbers changing later.” Provides written documentation you can review at home.
Quick reality check: If a quote can’t be explained clearly in writing, it isn’t transparent.

FAQ

Common questions about transparent vehicle pricing in Ontario

If you’d like help reviewing a quote from another dealer, bring it in—we’ll explain what you’re being shown.

What should I see first: price or payment?

Start with the selling price and all-in fees. Then calculate payments based on a disclosed rate and term. If the payment comes first without the price and math, you can’t compare offers fairly.

Is it normal for a trade-in value to include tax savings?

The tax savings is real in Ontario, but it’s best practice to show it separately. Ask whether the trade figure shown is the actual trade value or a blended number.

Are protection packages mandatory?

Optional products can be valuable, but they should be clearly disclosed and chosen by you—not quietly included in a quote or described as “required to finance.”

What documents should I ask for before I commit?

Request a written quote or bill of sale draft that shows: selling price, all-in fees, HST and licensing, trade details, lender rate, term, cost of borrowing, and total contract obligation.
